At the heart of Terasu is the historic practice of Kiri-bako. Terasu is an intimate collaboration between Chowa and the artisans of Fukuyama: it is the first creative design-object made at the workshop, with centuries of experience.
The Kiri (Paulownia) tree, used in kiri-bako, is ecologically beneficial due to its soil-healing leaves and carbon-offsetting ability, making it one of the most sustainable timber source.
For the past 300 years, the kiri-bako craft has created the humble object that plays a supporting role: the box. Chowa has developed a deep trust with the artisans of Fukuyama to create Terasu, the box that is a lamp, turning kiri-bako into a protagonist: celebrating the centuries-old traditions of Fukuyama and honoring the very essence of its heritage.
Terasu is designed like an Andon 行灯, a traditional Japanese lantern made of wood and washi paper. Originating from the Edo period, Andons were used to mark shops and were utilized by various classes and merchants.
Each element of the Terasu Lamp is handcrafted, with Akebono Kougei using four more processes than required to make a kiri-bako. With a limited line of production, Terasu exhibits the slow and sustainable, handcrafted practices of Fukuyama, Japan.
